Meet author Donna Schlachter
A hybrid author, Donna Schlachter writes squeaky clean historical and contemporary suspense. She has been published more than sixty times in books; is a member of several writers’ groups; facilitates a critique group; teaches writing classes; and judges in writing contests. She loves history and research, traveling extensively for both, and is an avid oil painter.
Tell us about your newest book.
Lily, a mystery novelist, and her sheriff husband find themselves embroiled in a decades-old crime that threatens their past, their present—and their future.
What inspired you to write your story?
I’d written two books in this series, and I felt it needed a third (and final) to tie up some loose ends and transition Lily and Peter into the next stage of their marriage and their lives.
What genre do you focus on.
I write historical and contemporary mysteries, because I have a strong desire for justice.
Who is your main character, and how did you choose that name?
Lily Duncan Golding is my Wild West rancher woman and romance writer. I chose Lily because the story originally released in a collection where the heroines had to have flower/plant names.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing a book?
I tend to write in 1 or 2-hour spurts. I find I type fast enough that I run out of words around that time. Which means I have to schedule each chapter to make sure I meet my deadlines.
What is the hardest part of being an author?
Promotion. It’s hard to say nice things about the words you’ve stared at and read fourteen times prior to it being published.
What’s the best part of your author’s life?
Discovering a poignant sentence. I’d forgotten I’d written and surprise myself anew with its poetry.
What’s one thing your readers should know about you?
I love Jesus more than anything or anybody, and I’m going to talk about Him in every story. He has given me so many second and third and fourth chances…suffice it to say, I should be dead or in prison except for Him.
How have you changed or grown as a writer?
In more than 20 years of writing, I’ve figured out that writing more books isn’t the complete answer. Long ago, the Lord told me the books were just the package—that the message would come from the stories and from me. So now I’ve ventured into the world of coaching authors to help them get their books and their writing careers where they want to be, and I also coach folks who want to tell, share, and preserve family stories for future generations. Both continue my legacy of writing, while ensuring I am continuing the God-honoring and Biblical call to write our stories.
What is your favorite pastime?
Binge watching British crime drama
Do you have other books? We’d love to know.
I thought you’d never ask. I sure do – 60+ to date. Here is my Amazon Author Page link: http://amzn.to/2ci5Xqq
What are you working on now?
Deciding which story to tell next, along with coaching folks as mentioned above. Planning our next trip. Trying to reinforce the notion to my two cats that they don’t rule the roost. And appreciating my husband who takes good care of me when I’m so busy my head is spinning, which seems to be most of the time.
